- <p> RETIRING. JOHN CHANCELLOR, 65, TV journalist; in New York City.
- The owlish, not-quite-avuncular Chancellor is departing the
- network after 43 years, during which he was a correspondent,
- a Today host and anchor of the NBC Nightly News; for the past
- 11 years he was a thrice-weekly commentator on that program.
- He interrupted his career as a journalist only to serve two
- years as President Lyndon Johnson's director of the Voice of
- America. In addition to his many other accomplishments, Chancellor
- achieved a career high point of sorts when security guards removed
- him from the raucous Republican National Convention of 1964,
- and he signed off saying, "This is John Chancellor, reporting
- from somewhere in custody."
