  15. <p>     RETIRING. JOHN CHANCELLOR, 65, TV journalist; in New York City.
  16. The owlish, not-quite-avuncular Chancellor is departing the
  17. network after 43 years, during which he was a correspondent,
  18. a Today host and anchor of the NBC Nightly News; for the past
  19. 11 years he was a thrice-weekly commentator on that program.
  20. He interrupted his career as a journalist only to serve two
  21. years as President Lyndon Johnson's director of the Voice of
  22. America. In addition to his many other accomplishments, Chancellor
  23. achieved a career high point of sorts when security guards removed
  24. him from the raucous Republican National Convention of 1964,
  25. and he signed off saying, "This is John Chancellor, reporting
  26. from somewhere in custody."
